The compact size, bushy shape and fast finishing time of an Indica, with the bright, cerebral high of a Sativa… what more can the cannabis cultivator ask for? Hybrid strains allow breeders to select for traits from both Indica and Sativa cannabis. Many of the most popular seeds available are hybrids, because they really do offer the best of both worlds. Indica and Sativa Phenotypes So what exactly are hybrids? There are two types of cannabis which are enjoyed recreationally and used medicinally: Sativa, and Indica. A hybrid strain is a cross of these two distinct types.

Sativa and Indica

Cannabis Sativa comes from the tropical and subtropical parts of the world. These plants are adapted to warm, humid climates and long growing seasons with little light variation. They have evolved a tall, Christmas tree shape with long internodes, thin leaves and open structure, all traits which allow for air flow around the entire plant. They tend to be slow to flower, taking advantage of long seasons to reach heights of over ten feet. Cannabis Sativa is a challenge in the grow room because of its size and slow flowering, but Sativa buds are much sought out by recreational and medicinal users alike because…

The Sativa high is:

  • Cerebral, psychoactive, energetic and uplifting
  • Good for daytime use
  • Powerful medicine for depression, anxiety, PTSD and other mental/emotional disorders
Mexican Sativa with Classic Slender Sativa Leaves To learn more about Sativa strains and check out our favorites, take a look at our Top 10 Sativa Seeds page. Cannabis Indica comes from the cooler, mountainous and arid regions of Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and the Himalaya. Its small, bushy shape and thick, broad leaves are methods for conserving water in climates that are dry and unpredictable. Indica strains flower quickly because of a short growing season and unpredictable frosts. These qualities make Indica desirable in the grow room, especially for novice growers. Spoetnik #1 is Pure Indica from Paradise with Broad Leaves Indica delivers a very different high from Sativa, however.

The Indica high is:

  • Heavy, narcotic, often described as “couch-lock”
  • Great medicinally for relieving pain, anorexia, insomnia and other physical ailments
  • Best enjoyed when you have nothing to do

The Chemistry

While levels vary amongst strains and even between individual plants, the difference in the effects from smoking Indica and Sativa cannabis can be explained through differences in THC, CBD and CBN levels. In general, Sativa is very high in THC and low in the other two cannabinoids. THC is the psychoactive molecule in marijuana. It creates the feelings of euphoria for which Sativa bud is so well loved. Indicas, on the other hand, tend to have greater amounts of CBD and CBN. For medicinal users this is a boon, as CBD has been shown to reduce inflammation, relieve pain and have sedative effects. It also moderates the action of THC, producing a “stoned” rather than “high” sensation. CBN is created as a bud ages and the THC begins to break down. High amounts of CBN make you feel druggy and sleepy and are usually undesirable in both recreational and medicinal marijuana. High CBN can be avoided by properly curing and storing your bud.

Breeding Hybrids

Thanks to hybrid breeding, growers can now choose from a wide range of seeds specifically suited to indoor grows, or to a particular outdoor climate. Specific effects can be created and enhanced in hybrids. Some strains, like White Strawberry Skunk from Green House are bred for enhanced flavor by crossing the musky skunk scents of Indicas with the fruity flavors of Sativas. White Strawberry Skunk from Green House is a Hybrid Bred for Flavor While you can certainly experiment with creating new hybrids in your own grow room, it is important to understand that creating a stable new strain is a lengthy and often expensive process. This is why quality seed banks typically only offer a small number of stains. For instance, you may decide to attempt to capture the energetic high of your favorite Sativa in a compact Indica package, and end up with a 10 foot behemoth that takes 12 weeks to flower and delivers a narcotic body stone. If you have the space and time it is certainly worth a go, just don’t expect to come out with the next White Widow on your first try. To learn more about cannabis breeding, check out our Strains, Genetics and Breeding page.

Characteristics of Hybrids

There is no formula for hybrid marijuana. They can be Sativa or Indica dominant, often having up to 80% of their genetics from one side or the other. Even in these cases, individual strains show great variation. For example, White Russian is 80% Indica yet delivers a clear, almost trippy high while Northern Lights #5, also 80% Indica, gives such a heavy, narcotic body stone that she is typically classified as Indica rather than hybrid. Northern Lights #5 Feminized Seeds In general, the goal with hybrid breeding is to capture Sativa effects in a plant that is more manageable to grow, or to create a balanced high that offers physical and cerebral effects.

Here are some traits that are characteristic of many hybrids, though certainly not all:

  • Easier to grow than pure Sativa
  • Dominant cerebral high with undertones of mellow body stone
  • Best for day-time smoking
  • Used to relieve pain, depression and anorexia
  • Medium to tall plants
  • Respond well to training techniques
  • Easiest to grow inside unless you live in an ideal climate
There are many hybrids which do not follow any of these trends. The wide variation of hybrid strains available means there is the perfect one for any taste, climate or growing set-up.

Famous Hybrid Strains

Hybrid strains include some of the most well-known and well-loved cannabis in the world. White Widow is perhaps the most famous hybrid, growing in an easy to manage Indica shape and delivering a stunning combination of zippy head high and narcotic body stone that will leave you in awe, and stuck to the couch. White Widow Seeds Other famous hybrids include Nebula from Paradise Seeds, another Indica phenotype with resinous buds and a psychedelic high that puts your head in the stars, and the award-winning AK-47 from Vision with its fast hitting, clear-headed Sativa effects. Widely recognized names like Pineapple Express, Juicy Fruit and NYC Diesel are all hybrids. They run the gamut from Indica to Sativa in both phenotype and high.

To Sum up Hybrid Seeds…

Hybrid strains are the most widely smoked cannabis today. Even strong Sativa or Indica dominant strains often have some hybrid genetics somewhere in their pedigree. Indica and Sativa cannabis have been traditionally separated by climate and location. In the constantly shrinking world in which we live, these two subspecies have finally met and brought greater diversity to the world of marijuana. We can now enjoy cerebral highs with a pleasant body buzz, or grow a compact plant and still smoke a Sativa bud. Further hybridizing with the wild Ruderalis subspecies has given us auto-flowering seeds. To learn more about auto-flowering hybrids check out our Top 10 Auto-Flowering Seeds page. All in all, hybridizing marijuana led to greater variety for all growers and smokers. The possibilities of new crosses are far from exhausted, and we can expect to see many more, tasty hybrid strains in the future.

A 50:50 hybrid crossing Big Bud genes with a selection of quality Skunks, these plants deliver a beautifully balanced mental/physical high. A few words of caution to indoor growers- the Sativa is dominant in the grow room. These plants are big and skunky.
